Truth in Taxation

What Tonka Bay Residents Should Know

What is it?
Truth in Taxation (TNT) is a state-required process that gives Tonka Bay residents clear information about proposed property taxes before they are finalized.

Why it Matters

  • Helps you understand how your property taxes may change

  • Explains why the City needs funding for services

  • Provides a chance for public questions and feedback before decisions are made

How It Works in Tonka Bay

  1. Proposed Budget & Levy Set
Tonka Bay prepares a preliminary budget for city services such as public safety, streets, parks, docks, and utilities.

  2. You Receive a TNT Notice
Mailed by the county, it shows your property value, estimated taxes, and Tonka Bay’s meeting date.

  3. Public Hearing
The City presents the proposed budget, explains changes from last year, and takes resident questions and comments.

  4. Final Levy Adopted
After the hearing, the City Council approves the final levy for the upcoming year.

Important Reminders

  • The TNT notice is not a bill—it’s informational.

  • Tax changes come from:

    • City budget needs

    • Shifts in your property value

    • How the tax burden is shared across all Tonka Bay properties

  • Resident participation is encouraged—your voice matters.
