Hennepin County Public Health E.coli Notification

HENNEPIN COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH

Hennepin County will be collecting water samples at Crescent and Wekota Beaches weekly during the summer period of May 19th, 2025 -August 25th, 2025. The water samples are tested Monday mornings except for Memorial Day; that week samples will be collected Tuesday, May 27th. After collection, samples are sent to an outside lab to test for Escherichia coli (E. coli) - an indicator organism. When lab tests reveal E. coli levels are above EPA standards, beach water may pose a health threat to individuals encountering the water. Hennepin County Public Health recommends closure of the beach due to high levels of bacterial contamination; our team will return the following day to resample. Our staff will make every effort to notify you of the test result as soon as possible; email notifications will be sent Tuesday afternoons only in the event of a high result ("failure"). A high E. coli result ("failure") exceeds the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recommended water quality standards for a single sample: 11Escherichia coli colonies from the last five samples shall not exceed a geometric mean of 126/100ml, nor shall any one sample exceed 235 colonies/1 00mL." In the event of a high result ("failure"), our team will automatically mark the beach as "Closed" on our "Hennepin County Beaches" map. If your organization makes the decision to remain open, the designated contact person or team must email the HCEH Beach Team directly stating this decision; at that point we will reverse the map to indicate the beach is "Open". Hennepin County's '"Public Swimming Beaches" webpage features an interactive map for beachgoers; it is updated in real-time to reflect beach status including any beach closures (www.hennepin.us/beaches).
